Tommy gets glasses

Tommy got glasses.  They came.

He hates them.

I hate them.

He needs them.

I know he needs them.

I hate them.

He looks adorable.

People tell me how cute he is.  People notice.  They notice the glasses.  The look questioningly at why only one has a bifocal.   They don't ask, but they notice.  I haven't created my spiel yet.  I will.  But I'm still digesting.  Still processing this latest edition of the eye chronicles.

I think he looks like the kid from Jerry McGuire.  I haven't been able to get "You had me at hello" out of my head.  It's kind of fitting.  He did have me at... well, not hello, but more like "waaaahhhhh".  Same difference.

  1. First, let me start by saying I'm one of the newest imoms. Second, and more importantly, I have to say he does look adorable. Glasses, no glasses, patch, no patch,he'd have me at hello too. My daughter goes Monday for a follow up and will get a new prescription for her glasses including (I assume)a bifocal for her left eye. So I'll be curious to hear more about your journey with this. I never considered just one bifocal and what that might mean.

  2. Welcome Heather! I could not survive without the imoms! I hope we all get to meet someday, as I feel as though we are a family of sorts. I'm sorry you have to go through this- but welcome! My email is darcieds@gmail.com if you want to chat!

    1. Hi!! Our 3 month old was born with a disorder of the eye called PHPV which in turn caused cataract in that eye. Surgery has been unsuccessful and will be left blind in that eye. It's all very scary yet makes us inspired by our little one that is handling surgeries and round the clock eye drops.
Because of going through this and knowing she will need glasses starting at a very young age, we couldn't find many options and decided to start our own company selling stylish and affordable glasses, to other parents in our same position, your kids will want to wear! They offer super flex hinges in plastic and metal designs in lots of fun colors! We also have eyepatches that slide over the glasses!
Feel free to visit our new online store to check out our selection!

  3. Ok so wait a min... he can choose to have either straight or curly hair?! He is too much, the hair, the smile, the cheeks and yes, the glasses. I'm sorry this transition isn't going smoothly, physically or emotionally. It's all hard, period. I don't forget that for one single second. Just keep going and don't pressure yourself. If he needs time, if you need time, just give it time. And in the meantime, stomp you feet cuz it sucks and it's hard.

On a more fun side note. :) I was playing around with the idea of an imom convention. I tried to find a common state based "roughly" on where we all live. I think it might be Ohio?! Ironically none of us live in Ohio but we all seem to live "kinda" around it? Depending on the location... I'm thinking more southwestern corner of it, it's like a 6-8 hour drive for me... any thoughts?

  4. I'm with Amanda-love the separate hair styles!!

AND, YES LET'S MEET IN OHIO!!!! I AM THERE!!!

Ok, back to Tommy. He does look adorable, he does need them, but...you can still hate them. It's that simple. I feel like people think we should just accept them with their glasses because they are "so cute" when really, they are just as cute without them. Just my rant on that.

He seriously is adorable. ADORABLE!!! It will get better, you will get used to them. And, so will he!

Welcome, Heather!! Start a blog for us to stalk you :)

  5. Haha! Totally didn't notice the many hairstyles of Tommy! He has curly hair when wet- or recently wet- that pic was taken at the water park (so recently wet). Once dry (or dirty!) it becomes straight.
I'm SO IN for Ohio! Do we want social or instructive? Or... better yet, we make THIS one social and plan for a "medical-ish" one that is bigger?

  6. I am in... SO IN for Ohio!

Also, I think he is absolutely freaking adorable! I just love his hair. The glasses garner so much attention, not just random strangers. Austin is back in glasses, too. It has been a while for us... It is "new". I feel like that is all I see when I look at him right now. I know it will be normal soon enough. BUT IT SUCKS!

Well said, Melissa of the gloverfamily... Sounds medieval... They are adorable without them. We are the only one that gets to see that. It just isn't fair. But we have taken on the patch, the contact, the surgery, the drops... We have this.

Welcome, Heather! I am sorry for the reason you are an iMom. But we are awesome. So glad to have your input.
P.S. I think a blog is in order, too.

  8. Ok so Summer weather is obviously the best and gives us some time to plan... a weekend thing? a family/kid thing? all in same hotel, with activities planned? Should we take this to an email? I say we stop talking about it and JUST DO IT! OeyeO 2013 here we come...

  11. I'm in! Ohio sounds wonderful! Include me in the loop - Kittynoah@hotmail.com. I can't wait to meet you all in person and give you all a hug and watch the amazement on our kids faces when they see a whole troup of kids in patches and glasses. How cool will that be! Seriously - lets start looking at dates so that we can work around everyone's summer vacations (we already have a cruise planned).

Now that I've hogged Darcie's post - I can comment on the cuteness that is Tommy. Kid makes me smile every time I see a pic. every.time. Just love him. And I hear you on the glasses. I was seriously contemplating duct taping Julia's on today but I figured someone would call DFS on me. I hope he takes to them quickly. And let me know what you come up with as a quick response to people. I need something witty.

...on a side note - why is it that we all hit the same things at the same time? Several of us are dealing with new glasses and patch wars?

And Heather - welcome! I am off to read your blog!
